Cane tips & ferrules / buying guide
How to measure
your cane tip size.
Start at the fitting point. A clear shaft measurement and connection description help identify a replacement tip or define a custom ferrule.
1. Identify how the tip attaches
Check whether the existing part pushes over the shaft, screws into a threaded fitting, or forms part of a larger base assembly. The same overall appearance can conceal different attachment methods. Photograph the connection before requesting a replacement.
2. Measure the shaft at the fitting point
For a socket-style tip that slides over the cane, measure the shaft’s outside diameter where the tip sits. Use a calliper if available and record the unit. If the end is tapered, oval or worn, provide measurements in more than one direction and a photograph of the fitting area.
3. Separate opening size from base size
The socket opening, outside base width and overall height describe different features. If you measure the removed tip, label each dimension on a photograph or sketch. A flexible or worn socket may not retain its original shape, so include the shaft measurement as well.
For a threaded ferrule, include the thread diameter, pitch where known, and the mating connection. For a quad base or assembled component, also show the shaft connection and footprint. A single width measurement is not enough to specify every type of base.
4. Confirm the unit and fit by sample
Write dimensions in millimetres or inches and identify which surface was measured. One inch equals 25.4 mm, but a converted number should not be treated as proof that two nominal fitting sizes are interchangeable. Material flexibility, profile and manufacturing tolerances can affect the final fit.
Check a proposed sample on the intended shaft before committing to a production order. Do not force a mismatched fitting or assume that appearance establishes its suitability for a support product. Include any intended-use and performance requirements in the specification.
